Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Calgary, Alberta

What is tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from its socket in the bone.

Is a tooth extraction painful?

Modern dentistry has come a long way from the dentist with pliers, one foot up on the chair, pulling as hard as they can to get the tooth out. You will feel pressure but should not feel pain. The injection needle to administer the anaesthetic can pinch but at Beddington Dental we use a special numbing gel to help. Once the anaesthetic has worn off, it’s possible for you to feel some discomfort that is treated with pain medication.

Wisdom teeth extraction

Often, when extracting teeth, we are referring to impacted (stuck in the jaw) wisdom teeth or third molars. These teeth can cause discomfort, inflammation, infection, and are extracted either before of after they come in. They commonly come in during the late teens or early twenties. If you need all four wisdom teeth, they are usually taken out at the same time. It can take up to two weeks to fully recover after your wisdom teeth are removed so be sure to stock up on cold liquids to help keep the mouth from drying out and ice to help ease any pain. You should also plan for the greatest Netflix binge of all time.

Other types of tooth extraction

Beddington Dental in Calgary only considers extraction after doing everything else possible to save the tooth, including root canal therapy. If the tooth has been traumatized, is decaying, or there is excessive loss of bone around the tooth due to periodontal disease one of our dentists will discuss the option of extraction with you.

How do I prepare for teeth extraction?

At Beddington Dental in Calgary, we have a panoramic X-ray to photograph all of your teeth at once. Our doctors then analyze the images to develop a better understanding of your needs, and provide you with the best solutions to move forward. Our clinical dentists may prescribe antibiotics to avoid infection and medicine to ease the pain. If you are sick, please inform us as early as possible since it may require postponement. After extraction, someone will need to drive you home and stay with you. Beddington Dental will provide post surgery instructions for you to follow in the comfort of your own home in Calgary.
