Non Surgical Gum Therapy in Calgary, Alberta

Why would I need gum surgery?

Gum disease or periodontal disease is when plaque and tartar build up on the tooth above and below the gum line. Modern research shows a correlation between this disease and stroke, heart attack, diabetes, and stomach ulcers. The major cause of periodontal disease is bacteria-ridden plaque under the gum line.

What is non-surgical gum therapy?

At Beddington Dental, our basic hygiene services protect you from the need of gum therapy. However, if required, our process begins with a measurement of the gums to determine the extent of the disease. Then, we offer scaling (plaque removal) and root planing (smoothing of root surfaces promoting reattachment to tooth surface) of the teeth to promote natural healing. Our non-surgical gum therapy removes plaque by irrigating the area to fight against unwanted bacteria. We then guide you with home care instructions to restore and maintain your gums back to health. After about a month, we take a new measurement to determine our progress toward healthy gums.

We may also prescribe antibiotics, either in pill form, or to be applied directly on the infected area in a powder form. An antibacterial mouth rinse can also help to control the harmful effects of the bacteria.

Early detection is key to avoiding surgery which is why at Beddington Dental we offer regular checkups to discover and treat the disease before it becomes too advanced. If it’s been a while since you last stopped in to see our dentists at our Calgary clinic, we may need to replace worn fillings, or dental crowns with poor margins, before the periodontal therapy can begin.
